US COVID-19 Surge Coming This Month

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the number of coronavirus cases in the country is likely to peak this month and decline by July.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of new cases of COVID-19 in America has dropped in recent weeks. Health officials are urging people to remain vigilant about the spread of varieties of the virus that may be more infectious and deadly than the original strain.

The Center's projections for four different scenarios for vaccination levels and state caps release show that the outbreak remains broadly the same in each projection. While cases are expected to rise in May, hospitalizations and deaths are likely to remain low across the country, the agency said. Under all four scenarios, the number of cases in the country in July is likely to decline again.

Center Director Rochelle Walensky noted that the new strains remain an unpredictable link, and their active spread could reverse the progress achieved in the fight against the pandemic in the United States.
