Electric cars have become more profitable to own than conventional cars

Leasing company LeasePlan has learned that due to the spike in fuel prices, the cost of owning and operating an electric vehicle has either equaled or fallen below the cost of owning a gasoline or diesel car.

Although the battery motor is more expensive than the traditional motor, its operating costs are lower. Analysts say total cost of ownership is a key factor that could drive widespread adoption of battery-powered vehicles.

So, the cost of a standard family car, such as the Ford Kuga, and its electric counterpart, the Škoda Enyaq, were equal. In some countries, an electric car was even cheaper. The cost of charging an electric car today is about 15% of the cost of owning and operating, and the cost of refueling a diesel car is about 28%.
