Nintendo Switch becomes the third best-selling console of all time

Surprising Nintendo results have been revealed in their latest financial report for investors, showing an impressive increase in sales of the Switch console with 8.2 million units sold in the last three months of 2022. This brings the total number of consoles sold to an impressive 122.55 million, making the Switch one of the most popular and successful gaming consoles in history. Since its launch in March 2017, the Switch has risen to become the third best-selling console in history.

The two consoles that precede it are the handheld Nintendo DS, in second place with 154 million units sold in total, and Sony's PlayStation 2 console, in first place by a hair with just over 155 million units. The recent sales series allowed it to surpass Game Boy and Game Boy Color, which together sold 118.69 million, and Sony's PlayStation 4 (just over 117 million) for first place.

So the Switch is a distant third. To be honest, it may not last long enough to reach the milestones of second or first place.

Aside from the PlayStation 4, the Switch is the only console among the top five that is still being manufactured, although the production of the PlayStation 4 has been reduced to a minimum and, according to reports, was only recently manufactured because Sony had many problems satisfying the demand for the PlayStation 5. But given that the supply of the PlayStation 5 finally seems to be satisfying or exceeding demand in many regions, the PlayStation 4 probably has very little chance, if any, at this stage.

On the other hand, the Switch is still the latest from Nintendo, and not even a successor has been announced, much less released, so it probably has many months to go. However, it is not clear whether there will be enough to surpass the DS or PlayStation 4. Switch sales have slowed down noticeably lately, and if that trend continues, it could push Nintendo to go ahead with a successor.

At six years old, and with a drastic technological deficit compared to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, it would not surprise us to know sooner than later that the Switch is also approaching the end of its cycle. It could happen tomorrow, or it could happen in two more years, but it will definitely happen sooner than later.

Nintendo has scheduled a new live broadcast of Nintendo Direct today at 5 p.m. ET. The company says the broadcast will last about 40 minutes, but new hardware is unlikely as Nintendo tweeted that the broadcast "will mainly focus on #NintendoSwitch games that will be released in the first half of 2023".
